Mario
Martinez started Jackson's chess team in
1992. During that school year the team won the Dade
County Championship and became Florida High School
co-Champions. Since then, the team has won 7 more
county titles, 4 more state titles, and in 1998 the
"Dream Team" won the National
Championship. Miami Jackson has produced two state
Champions Juan Barry (1996) and Marcel Martinez (1998,
1999) and two National High School Champions Marcel
Martinez (1998) and Rodelay Medina (2000). Marcel
Martinez also won the 1999 Interplay United States
Junior Championship. Jackson's chess team will
continue to produce outstanding chess players for many
years to come.
